Ford Focus Gains Power with a Stage 1 Remap at Southwest Performance, Cornwall

A Ford Focus came into our garage in Pool, Cornwall seeking a boost in power. We recommended the 1.6TDCI, has our Southwest Performance Stage 1 remap, developed by Avon Tuning.

We are proud to be Avon Tuning’s only representatives in the Southwest.

Before we could begin, we needed to check the cars condition. We do this to see that to our knowledge, there are no faults which could compromise the cars condition in the future due to our mapping.

Once we were happy with the health of the car, we applied the reliable Avon Tuning stage 1 remap through our top of the range equipment. We are continuously updating our equipment to stay ahead and ensure we are available to everyone.

Power Jim but not as we know it

After the remapping was complete we took the Ford Focus remap for a test drive. The initial readings should have been 109 horse power or hp and 240 torque or nm. As they car had high mileage we found that it actually made 98 hp and 215nm. During the second drive it was revealed the stage 1 remap had increased the hp to 133 (136 expected) and the nm to 300 (310 expected).

These results mean that the car will now run more efficiently, and have more power, the slightly less than expected figures were no doubt down to the 172,000 miles the car had covered, still very respectable and the customer did not wish to have any work done on the inlet system to clean away carbon.

Walnut Blasting?

We did offer to carry out a walnut blasting of the inlet system and run the engine through a cleaning process but the owner decided just to do the oil change and flush himself.

Who can remap properly?

It is always recommended you go to a reputable company to remap your car. If the remapping is incorrect, you could find yourself with unnecessary issues and bills.

The boss of Southwest Performance has written the very thesis on how to map cars which is used around the world at mapping training centres. The paper is particularly referred to when training mechanics.

BMW Remap E90 320d Stage 1 Remap Southwest Performance, Cornwall

A local customer from Redruth, Cornwall headed in to us today seeking a stage 1 remap for their BMW 320d. The owners wanted faster reacting acceleration and a better all round economical performance.

Avon Tuning’s stage 1 remap can give the customer both of these needs.

When we remap a vehicle we need to look over the inside and outside, before starting any remapping. By fixing any issues prior to the remap we can comfortably remap your car without any issues appearing later on, due to the increase in power. We also check the age and mileage of the car to check it can handle the boost.

Now we are happy with the cars condition we will carry out the BMW Remap as a stage 1. This stage 1 remap is created by the reputable Avon Tuning and applied by us at Southwest Performance. Our equipment is the highest standard it can be, making sure to update frequently in order to stay ahead of the game.

Soon after the remap was completed we took the BMW Remap for a test drive and watched the numbers increase. The original data was 184 hp or horse power and 380 nm or torque. The BMW Remap has caused the numbers to increase to 210 hp and 420 nm, a significant increase which will be felt on the road and in the bank.

Who can remap properly?

You should always go to a reputable company to remap your car. If the remapping is incorrect, you could find yourself with unnecessary issues and bills. We see quite a few customers with incorrect remaps that have resulted in problems such as a blocked DPF.

Our boss of Southwest Performance created the very thesis on mapping cars, it is used around the world at mapping training centres. The thesis is particularly looked upon when training mechanics.

VW Transporter T5.1 gets a boost with a stage 1 Remap

We had a VW Transporter remap T5.1 booked in today, taking advantage of our special Facebook offer of £100 for a VW Transporter remap. The customer come in locally from Redruth with his work van. When dropping off the vehicle the owner also asked to have the speed limiter removed.

The owner wanted to add some power to the van without applying too much strain upon the gears and the engine. As the van was a work van he only wanted a little boost when getting around.

To begin with we carried out a health check on the van to check everything was in order, any faults which are not addressed prior to mapping, could cause an issue down the line. We then used our latest equipment to apply Avon Tuning’s trusted stage 1 remapping software to the van.

Taking the van for a test drive we measured the improvements of the VW transporter remap, stage 1. The van was originally reading 84 horse power or hp and  torque or 220 nm, however, with our stage 1 remap it has increased to 175 bhp and 400 nm. The change in nm will have a noticeable increase upon the owners wallet as the economical efficiency will be significantly better.

Customer Feedback

As soon as the owner had driven home, he gave us lovely feedback for the vans change in response, since dropping it off. One very happy customer at Southwest Performance.

“Thanks so much, it’s feeling good!”

Remap BMW 520 Engine Failing to Rev due to lack of Power caused by Blocked DPF

Bad Remap BMW 520 – Fixed

This remapBMW came in to us from Camborne with the customer reporting the engine failing to rev fully and a lack of power. Previously the car had been remapped by someone else. The incorrectly remapped BMW required a visit to Southwest Performance Cornwall, in order to be remapped to carry out a regeneration as well as reinstating the original DPF.

Originally Incorrectly Remapped BMW 520 Fixed Go Diagnostics Cornwall

The Incorrect Remap BMW problem

Carrying out a diagnostic on the bad remap BMW, we could see it was not able to regenerate whilst driving, and that the pressure sensor readings were static and low for the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

The first remap BMW had  blanked the EGR and removed the DPF, however the DPF was still on the car. Due to the remap BMW still having the DPF without ‘knowing’ as it were, the DPF became blocked. The turbo would stall due to the blocked DPF, this then caused the air to not reach the engine when driving at 2700 RPM or higher.

Having removed the files for the DPF from the Electrical Control Unit (ECU), the car was unable to carry out a regeneration (clean itself). However, when the ECU was forced to have a static regeneration by being connected to a diagnostic scan tool, it was still able. The pressure sensor readings and active regeneration are the only files being deleted.

Correct Remapping

By re-flashing the original factory map and removing the incorrect map, we were able to bring back all of the readings.

We added a popcorn hard limiter during this remap, as an extra request of the customer. After carrying out an active regeneration which we observed carefully, the BHP had gone up to 231 and the NM is now 462.

By deleting the maps command structure, we were able to correct the Swirl Flaps problem as well as having the DPF reinstated. By correcting the Swirl Flaps issue, the ECU will not attempt to run Swirl or show a fault code, instead it will utilise an alternative mapping overlay, producing low end torque.

In the end we concluded the remap BMW was previously incorrect. The bad remapping consisted of a DPF delete, an EGR delete, Swirl Flap removal and we estimate it to have been modified to 420 NM and around 210 BHP. This particular incorrect remap caused a lack in power due to the Diesel Particulate Filter or DPF becoming blocked.

We have brought the car back to life by reinstating the correct specifications, fitted the DPF, removed the EGR as well as the Vmax and had the popcorn limiter added. The outcome being an increase in 9% in BHP and 9% in NM from the bad remap, plus, no faults to be caused by this remap now or in the future.

The Total Cost

Remapping costs can vary a little due to the condition of your vehicle and what you would like to achieve. Remapping starts at £100. This specific job cost £250 which includes running the initially diagnostic to discover the problem.

Who can remap properly?

Going to a reputable company for remapping your vehicle is always highly recommended. If you were to find yourself having issues with your car, you may not even begin to think it was the original faulty remap which is causing the issue. Just like this remap BMW owner, you don’t want to find yourself paying out for other peoples mistakes.

The very thesis used in training centres around the world on how to remap cars was written by the boss at Southwest Performance. This document is distinctly referred upon when mechanics are in training.
